I had no plans to buy a basket, much less update it. So here we go, how to update a little basket. Yes I bought a basket because I liked the style, not the color. It was missing the wicker that was around the one handle. No problem I figured out what to do.
First things first. I gave this little thrift store treasure a white wash of diy white chalk paint. Isn’t it interesting that it turned a driftwood gray because of the dark color? After I mixed up the white paint I got a container of water. I dipped the brush in the water and then the paint and brushed it on.
If it looked a little thick I went over it with water. I just did that and worked it until I got the look I was going for. That immediately gave the basket an updated look. I did start by painting the bottom, let it dry and then flipped it over and white washed the inside of the basket and the rim.
Once it was dry I brushed on Polycrylic, first on the bottom and then the inside and rim. I allowed that to dry.
Time to fix those handles. I had bought rope for another project, so I had what I needed to fix up the handles. I wasn’t sure how much rope I would need so I wrapped it around the handle first. Then using hot glue to get a fast start, I tacked the one end to an inconspicuous spot on the inside of the handle. Since I had it wrapped I applied E6000 and hot glue in spots in between the pieces of rope on the handle to make sure it was secure. Then I hot glued the other end.
Because I now knew how much rope I needed, I did the other side a little differently. I did use the hot glue to get a fast secure start on the one end. Then I started wrapping the rope and every so often I used the E600o in between for security, I also used the hot glue as I wrapped so it all stayed tight. Once again I used the hot glue to secure the end.
I just can’t believe how quick and easy this update was. And sometimes that is all you need to do to freshen up your décor. So now that you know how to update a little basket, I hope you will give it a try when you run into one that has good lines.
