It is amazing what changing the cabinet hardware can do. I bought this cabinet and its mate at a garage sale. As you can see this one has 2 drawers. The mate has a door and still needs a makeover. When I saw this one I knew how cute it would be painted white with black card catalog pulls. I think I was right, don’t you?
So I knew this would be the perfect project piece for this edition of the Fab Furniture Flippin Contest©. I made the hardware selection which was very easy this time since I knew exactly what I wanted. DL Lawless has a wonderful selection of knobs and pulls. You can see the end table I did using one of the pulls. And then there is the curbside find I fixed up. So as you can tell there is something for every style.
As I was waiting for the package to come in the mail I got to work on the cabinet. Now, this is not wood and was beat up. It had to be sanded in spots to smooth out the little chips and dings in the finish. Along with the paint that was flaking off. And why this is showing as white I don’t know. It was painted a light blue.
After that, I cleaned it and primed the cabinet and the drawers. Now you may question this decision but I painted the cabinet a navy blue. I didn’t want it to look really crisp and white. I say that because I knew I was going to paint it white. And the layer of navy would tone it down. My vision was an old card catalog.
So once the navy dried I gave the cabinet 2 coats of the white chalk like paint. To finish it up I sanded lightly and waxed the cabinet with a clear wax.
Now for the fun part. But first I had to buy screws to attach the pulls. And spray paint them black. It always takes me 2 trips to get it right. On the second trip, I brought the drawer to the store to take the guesswork out of the length of the screw.
Then it was time to attach them to the cabinet. I love it! To really make it authentic I created 2 labels to insert in the slots and there you have it. Am I right? It is amazing what changing the cabinet hardware can do. You can see the matching cabinet here.
