For some reason this little table always made me think Coastal. Maybe it was because the original finish looked sort of like bleached driftwood. You may have first seen this table when I wrote about my pickin’ adventure. I knew I would use Saltwash on it. When it was finished to me it became the table that looks like a Hawaiian shirt. Do you see it?
To start with there was a little spot on top where the paint was flaking off. This chippy look was not the stylish one we all love so I figured a little sanding would fix it. Wrong! Stripping and sanding the entire piece it was ready for the first coat of paint.
The first coat of paint is the one that has the Saltwash in it. You can see my other Saltwash projects, here and here. I followed the directions for a small amount since this is a small table. It is so much fun, you glob the paint on. When it sets up a little you knock the peaks down but I didn’t have any.
The paint color I selected is a deep rich beautiful teal. I almost hated covering it up but that is the whole point of using Saltwash, the effect is amazing. I used the leftover paint from my rocking chair project with the broken arm. I had mixed up a white using Poppie’s Repurposing Paint Powder but the color was too white for the project.
I painted the entire table except for the drawer. I had plans for it and that is what makes me think of a Hawaiian Shirt.
For the drawer, I taped off the drawer and sides in thirds. I used the Saltwash mixture for the middle stripe. Then I painted the front and sides with the white paint.
Now for the fun part, at least that is what I call it. Sanding, yup you sand it until it is smooth and the design takes shape.
To wax it, I used the buffing brush attachment for the drill to bring up a nice luster. I added a star knob because it was the closest thing I could find to a starfish. And that is when I looked at the drawer and all I could think of is the table that looks like a Hawaiian Shirt.
